About Me
Sharla Steinman
I'm a bilingual journalist from Los Angeles, but I am currently based in New York City while getting my Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. When I complete my program in 2025, I hope to report on a metro desk in a major U.S. city.
I'm most interested in reporting on politics, business, police, crime, protests, housing, and transportation — all on a local scale. But, I also love writing breaking news stories and working on tight deadlines.
In my courses at Columbia, I'm mastering the art of reporting and meeting quick deadlines. I'm learning how to pitch stories and create audio journalism pieces, as well as broadcast writing and photography.
Since being at Columbia, I have freelanced for the New York Times and work on the Associated Press’s Election Tabulation team.
I graduated from UCLA with my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 2024. During my time at UCLA, I served as the city and crime editor at the Daily Bruin, UCLA's award-winning student newspaper.
In my work at the Daily Bruin, I honed in on my ability to write, edit, research, lead, and produce breaking news stories. I mainly authored stories on LA City Council, Westwood politics, business, and events in the community, including UCLA’s 2024 protests.
I was also a frequent guest on the Daily Bruin podcast, "This Week," where I was awarded second place for best news podcast by the California College Media Association. I was also Daily Bruin's Endowment Scholar in 2023.
I have previous experience in politics. I interned in Congressman Brad Sherman’s office, where I assisted constituents over the phone, at events, and helped with office duties. I also previously interned for Makers Strategies, a political consulting firm, where I conducted research on various environmental organizations for A-list clientele. In my role, I also made various social media posts.
I can speak, read and write in both Spanish and English.
